REALTOR vs. Used Car Salesman

Why compare the two? Used car salesmen are not bad people, the article is about the perception of the two. It's not who is better.

The reason for this post:
Realtors often are the sheep in wolves clothing. I feel like the general public perceives us as sales people as opposed to a service provider who guides his client through a real estate transaction.

The Salesman:
A salesman's job is to qualify you to see if you can make the purchase. Then they find out what makes you tick. They find out what they can say to make you buy a car TODAY. There are no steering laws or blockbusting laws. There is no legal obligation for them to act in your best interest. When you sit across from the car salesman, they will take out a piece of paper, do some fuzzy math to calculate the dealer's margin and slide the paper in front of you to show you what you will be paying for the car. You, the customer get the feeling that you are working against this person to get a better deal as opposed to trying to find a win-win for both parties.

The Realtor:
What the general public doesn't understand about a Realtor is that they abide by a code of ethics and are legally obligated to protect their fiduciary (the buyer or seller client). Realtors are required to be confidential, accountable, obedient, loyal, and disclose any material facts that impact their client. Instead of working with a salesman type, you have an agent who has helped many others like you working right along side you to guide you through the process. Below are the fiduciary responsibilities of a real estate agent.

Accountability - Your Realtor should be there for you when you need them, or at least be available when they say they will.

Care & Confidentiality - Your Realtor should not disclose any information about you or your ability to purchase without your permission within his/her legal ability

Obedience - Your Realtor should do whatever you tell them and not take any action that you tell him/her not to take. (example: no showings until further notice, waiting to submit an offer until the morning, etc.)

Loyalty - Your Realtor should always be honest with you and act in your best interest

Disclosure - Your Realtor should disclose to you any facts that they have been given so you can make the best possible home buying or selling decision. (example: you're buying a house and there are multiple offers already)

As you can see, the distinct difference between a Realtor and a Salesman is the degree of service and care you receive. Did this article create a paradigm shift or change in perception? If so make comments below.

Hopefully if you live in Kentucky or the Greater Cincinnati area, you have chosen an agent that truly cares about your satisfaction and making sure your sale or purchase goes seamlessly. If not my contact information is below.
